A couple of weeks ago I went to an event at the wonderful bookshop Gay’s The Word, at which two brilliant writers were speaking about their new books: Stella Duffy and Catherine Hall. Catherine’s second novel, The Proof of Love, is one of my favourites, and it won the Green Carnation Prize in 2011. The Repercussions, her third novel, was published just a few weeks ago, and I was lucky enough to speak to her about it for Polari magazine. We talked about the inspirations behind the novel, which is partly set in present-day Brighton, partly in Brighton during the First World War and partly in contemporary Afghanistan, about the research necessary for a historical novel, about war, racism, gender and what it’s like to be a queer writer today. You can read the interview in Polari here.
